Association of Virtual Worlds - Rumors and Boards

Some quick bullets, and a slide show, from Cory Ondrejka , so this post has *some* substance. I agree that Second Life has done quite a bit to further the advancement of Virtual Worlds. As technology advances (Moore’s Law anyone?) I imagine we are going to see innovation really accelerate.

Fact: I have accepted an invitation to join the Association of Virtual Worlds’ Advisory Board along with Chadrick Baker, Lori Bell, Bruno Cerboni, Dr. Sara de Freitas, Francesco D’Orazio, Michael Drew, Rahul Dutta, Cynthia Freese, Sasha Frieze, Dr. Hanan Gazit, Darius Lahoutifard, Dr. Chang Liu, Andrew Peters, Liz Ryan, Colin Trethewey, David Wisotzky and Zafka Zang. Quite a crew of very smart people and future thinkers…I am honored and hope I can make a solid contribution. Release is slated for tomorrow…

Rumor: A preview of CISCO’s telepresence application was described to me as “jaw dropping”. Hope to learn more…source- trusted.

As I said earlier about virtual world growth.

I partially disagree with the “unique marketing opportunity” as that is only part of the equasion. As someone who spends quite a bit of time studying “virtual worlds” I think the bigger bets are on collaboration, eroding work place silos, training, fast prototyping and business interactions. Bank on it- other countries are.

Here is the slide show from Cory…lengthy yet interesting if you look at virtual worlds in context to other technological growth…keep in mind that Spore is coming down the pipe…

How Social Media Can Work

Posted in Attention, Blogging, P2P, Skype, Social Networks, Twitter, VoIP Fanatics, Web 2.0 by wayne.porter on June 17th, 2008

How “Social Media” Can Work

I have blogged quite extensively on Twitter since January of 2007. I have tried to reduce a “social media interaction” using Twitter down to basic essentials and simple analysis. This is how “one-to-one” communication can work with the Net helping those with shared interests, no matter how strange- connect.

Process:

  • I visit Blair Warren’s about page which sports diverse interests like mythology,  marketing and cult leaders. This mix is too good not to at least skim. Diversity and niche attract my interest.
  •

  •  His odd collection of interests and succinct posts, lined with his own brand of “crooked wisdom”, persuade me to add his Feed to my Reader.
  •

  • We started Tweeting on the strangeness of Aleister Crowley- which is hardly normal marketing banter, but as he points out to me- reading about Crowley is far more entertaining than any of the craziness the guy ever wrote. Our interest in a very odd subset of information is shared.
  •

  • I send Blair a direct tweet on an idea to monetize his work based on his strengths and my own skill sets.
  •

  • Blair direct tweets back his telephone number- call when you are able. I use Skype (VOIP) to dial his number.
  •

  • We end up talking for two hours on a myriad of subjects- exchanging ideas and insights and we both agree we are more interested in “who” reads what we write as opposed to “how many”. I believe fair value was exchanged on both of our sides as we shared “insights”. It certainly was useful for me and had real world “worth”. ROI.
  • Analysis:

If Blair had not had a blog, and had not been using Twitter (ditto for me) we would have never met, nor exchanged insights- which are critical and hard to come by. The opportunity to pick up the phone or Skype and create a more meaningful interaction simply could not have happened. Of course Blair did take the initiative and I am not sure what stimulated this. His “about me” page and tight quips helped me qualify why I might want to read further and spend my time- which is valuable. In this case our shared eclectic interests in persuasion, among other things, helped form a bridge.

    Conclusion:

While I primarily blog on this site for my own interests (have fun) and “to think out loud” I really need to work on reducing my thoughts and words into more manageable chunks- even if I am pranking someone say- Scoble.

I don’t deliberately try to write in such a sprawling fashion, or talk over anyone’s head. It is a matter of Appalachian dialect and flat-out poor writing habits combined with an avid reader’s vocabulary. I tend to write exactly how I talk. This tells me my speaking can be greatly improved too. Probably by shutting up a bit more or soliciting more feedback.

I also tend to write “stream-of-consciousness style” and jump from A to Z all the while assuming the reader is well versed in security or e-commerce or virtual worlds, or whatever area I am exploring. I tend to explore wide and diverse areas and I do it fast. Just like I read.

That doesn’t mean I have to write the same ”echo-chamber” lists or follow the identical formulaic formats that I see and get bored with around the web. I should make use of list formats and short-form paragraphs, with careful work on reduction, before hitting “publish”. This will help me and assist readers, who might also be potential collaborators, in making a decision on whether to “sign on for something more”.

That simple. Blog, RSS, Micro-blog exchanges, VOIP, E-mails- Insight.

Next post I may tackle aesthetics, but for now I will settle for the ROI on Twitter & Blogs.

MeBeam Multi Party Video for Skype - Jabber Clients

Posted in Skype, Video, VoIP Fanatics by wayne.porter on June 3rd, 2008

VoIP fanatics will dig a new service called MeBeam, not Jim Beam, which offers Multi-User Video for Skype- as of June 1. Big deal? Yes. Skype doesn’t handle multi-video conference calling- with MeBeam it can.

    MeBeam Party Video Chat

The service is in beta, and may not be 100% stable, but, you can now get up to 16 person video calls available from skype.

No need to download anything, you can start a video conference with your skype friends, directly from the Skype user interface, with minimal effort. Up to sixteen users!

Assuming you have already added the contact MeBeam to your skype list, and your ready to start a multi person video call - click on user MeBeam in your contact list, and then click on the ’send contacts’ menu item, as shown in this screen shot.

Will this kill podcasts? I don’t know. Your mileage may vary, but this has real potential.

MeBeam How To at the: MeBeam Blog.

Just add MeBeam to your users list.

    RMeBeam Add To Contacts

    Privacy Features

A new feature has been added to MeBeam, which might come in handy during a multi-person video conference- you want to discuss something in private.

When you move your mouse over someones video you will see a new option appear in the bottom right hand corner which says ‘Private’, clicking on this will cause the word ‘Private’ to appear on your video on their screen notifying them of you wanting to break away from the conference and discuss something

You can accept a private invitation by also clicking on the ‘Private’ button.

Not Just Skype- Jabber Clients Too!

MeBeam does Pidgin Video, WengoPhone Video, iChat Video, and Trillian Video. Sweet!

A few months ago Andreas Monitzer wrote a plugin for the Adium instant Messenger,
this gaave Adium users the ability to make multi-person video calls to not only to other Adium users, but anyone else using a Jabber based instant messenger. Other Jabber based instant messengers have also developed plugins, such as Coccinella, Miranda, Google Talk etc.

It also sports an Operator service, which will allow anyone using a Jabber instant messenger to make a multi person video call to anyone.

So if your using Pidgin, WengoPhone, iChat, Trillian or any other Jabber instant messenger, simply add operator@mebeam.com to your contact list, type the word call followed by the jabber id of the person you wish to call and the operator service will take care of the rest.

For example to establish a video call from your Pidgin instant messenger to your friend john_smith who is on Google Talk, simply type in the following into the operator chat window.

    call john_smith@gmail.com

    Windows Reboots Triggered Skype Glitch

Posted in Skype, VoIP Fanatics, Web 2.0 by wayne.porter on August 20th, 2007

Did you experience the recent Skype glitch? Interesting how it happened…because of a routine Windows patch there were a high number of restarts which affected Skype’s network resources. This caused a flood of log-in requests, combined with other factors caused a chain reaction that had a serious impact on the Skype Service. Ultimately Skype took the blame for the outage…

FRANKFURT, Germany (AP) — A two-day outage that left millions of Skype users unable to use the popular Internet phone service was caused by an abnormally high number of restarts after people had downloaded a Windows security update, the company said Monday.

The worldwide outage, which began on Thursday and ended on Saturday, left millions of Skype users unable to log on to make phone calls or send instant messages.

Luxembourg-based Skype Ltd., part of online auction giant eBay Inc., has more than 220 million users in total but typically has 5 million to 6 million users online at any given time. In January, Skype reported that it had counted 9 million users online at one time.

In an update to users on Skype’s Heartbeat blog, employee Villu Arak said the disruption was not because of hackers or any other malicious activity.

Instead, he said that the disruption “was triggered by a massive restart of our users’ computers across the globe within a very short timeframe as they re-booted after receiving a routine set of patches through Windows Update,” Arak wrote.

    Skype iPhone IM+ for Skype

Posted in Mobile, Skype, VoIP Fanatics, Web 2.0, iPhone by wayne.porter on August 16th, 2007

IM+ for Skype - beta version is now on the market. Produced by SHAPE- SHAPE works directly to produce some of the hottest aggregation applications for mobile users. SHAPE is a Nokia Developer Partner and Blackberry ISV Alliance Partner. Among SHAPE’s partners include SonyEricsson and Motorola Asia, T-Mobile and Orange. If you are new to VoIP- VoIP, in a nutshell, uses your dial-up or broadband connection to make free calls over the internet. The acronym VoIP stands for Voice over Internet Protocol and is the technology for transmitting voice conversations via the internet. Thus Skype is a VoIP application, and a tough one for Enterprises because it sports encryption, it is port agile and a number of other tricky technical aspects…It is my application of choice- period.

IM+ for Skype is a web service that enables voice and text communication with other Skype users and provides cost-effective calling to landlines and mobiles.
The application is designed especially for iPhone’s touch screen and complements the design and interface of iPhone, which if you use it, you know how easy it is to use.

    Features:

Call Skype users to their PCs.

With IM+ for Skype you can talk with other Skype users all over the world and see who is online and chat with Skype users

With IM+ for Skype it is possible to have chat conversations with other users who are logged in with their Skype accounts on PC. Text messaging is also a cost effective way to say something to your contacts instead of sending an SMS if you are not on an unlimited plan. By looking who is online, and sending a text message you can also check whether the contact is ready for a call.

IM+ for Skype is based on SkypeOut service that allows users to make and receive calls for a low fee. You can Make cost-effective calls to any destination and have Network Independence as the service works worldwide in any 3G⁄GSM⁄CDMA network and doesn’t require WiFi.

Truly and completely mobile software. It does not even require the PC with Skype running. IM+ for Skype enables users to call regardless of where they are.

I tested it and found the interface and built-in help making it a breeze. You get a 7-day free trial and Helen, at SHAPE, informs me they are a Skype certified application.

There is a small one time fee, with all updates included so no monthly subscriptions. Free technical support via e-mail 7 days a week.

VoIP Fraud- Phreaking Alive and Well

Posted in E-Commerce, Security, VoIP Fanatics by wayne.porter on March 24th, 2007

According to the UK Register, VoIP Phreaking is not only alive, but thriving.

Telecoms fraud is a well known, if under-reported problem, that pre-dates the internet by years. It is a multimillion-dollar business, with estimates of direct damages resulting from fraud varying from $35bn to $40bn a year.

This fraud comes in many guises of which the growing trade in VoIP phreaking is just one relatively small but growing component. Newsweek reports that uncovering the perpetrators of this illicit trade is extremely difficult, if not impossible.

Color me silly. I tended to equate phreaking with antiquated ideas like blue boxing, John Draper, and whistle tones at 2600 mHZ….given the inevitable rise of VoIP- this will be a plague.

First we have (NASDAQ: CSCO) Cisco Sytems buying up “social media” infrastructure…that was hardly the end as they gobbled up WebEx for estimated 3.2 billion. However, WebEx was not the only acquisition Cisco Systems Inc.’s announced last week either- although probably the largest. The powerhouse also snapped up (for an unknown sum) to acquire privately held NeoPath Networks, a provider of file storage management solutions. NeoPath markets a line of File Director products (they call it “SMART virtualization”) with the promise to help simplify management of NAS and other file servers.

In addition to this Cisco unveiled new functions in its TelePresence products this week that seem to be designed to support “crowds”- big crowds.

This new multipoint switch makes it possible for a company to set up online conferences with participants from as many as thirty-six separate locations. A company also can use a new B2B feature to extend virtual meetings to include customers, partners and contractors (anyone really) working in offices not behind their own firewall. The TelePresence product, which is old news, creates a huge videoconferencing environment that “simulates” a live meeting space. The latest functions being adding lets participants share documents, PowerPoints, images and even 3-D objects! With “Auto-Collaboration” a camera is used to capture an image and display it for participants with a projector…interesting.

Cingular, Sprint, Qwest Blocking Calls to FreeConference.com

Posted in Censorship, E-Commerce, Free Software, Technology, VoIP Fanatics by wayne.porter on March 18th, 2007

Freeconference.com has always been a neat and free service (they make money on the premium features). Maybe not one designed for large enterprises, but for aspiring small businesses it is an excellent value. Imagine my dismay when I received this e-mail. I haven’t tested it yet but if it holds true I feel it is worthy for all to read…this is where netizens, bloggers and humanity can get involved. Truly awful behavior.

    Dear FreeConference User:

AT&T/Cingular, Sprint, and Qwest Are Blocking Your Conference Calling

As of Friday, March 9, it’s come to our attention that Cingular Wireless has begun blocking all conference calls made from Cingular handsets to selected conference numbers. If you call our service, you receive a recording that says, “This call is not allowed from this number. Please dial 611 for customer service”.

Earlier this week, Sprint and Qwest joined in this action, blocking cellular and land line calls to these same numbers. This appears to be a coordinated effort to force you to use the paid services they provide, eliminating competition and blocking your right to use the conferencing services that work best for you.

Don’t Let AT&T/Cingular, Sprint, or Qwest Take Away Your Right to Use the Conference Service of Your Choice!

We Need Your Help! Please Take the Actions Below:

Whether you are one of their customers, or an organizer who is being impacted by these anticompetitive actions, please file a complaint with the FCC or send an email to your State Attorney General to complain about this monopolistic practice to limit the choices of consumers.

You can also let these companies know how you feel about their attempt to block competitive services:

Sprint Customers can click here or dial *2 from their Sprint Phone

Cingular Customers can click here or call 1-888-333-6651

Qwest Customers can click here or call 1-800-860-2255

Your FreeConference Team remains steadfastly committed to bringing you simple, convenient and reliable conferencing services at the lowest cost possible. We appreciate your support in this endeavor.

Lenovo - Avaya VoIP: Nortel Restates, MSFT Pontificates

VoIP Tangle Week…The VoIP arena Sees a Serious Techno Tango Slugfest among heavyweights, but I am watching the Social Media Infrastructure Plays…by the Mountaineers in Cisco Systems. They know what it is all about!

    AVAYA SOA PROMISE

On March 5th Avaya promised Telephony 2.0 announcing new capabilities that bring SOA (service-oriented architecture) bred into telephony so companies can easily integrate this into their business processes. I decided to hold my breath on AV.

AVAYA and LENOVO UNITE AROUND FINGERS and SOFTPHONE

Avaya then announces their IP Softphone and the inclusion of biometric logins via a deal with Lenovo which promises authentication and therefore prevention of unauthorized calls- this makes sense. All through Lenova’s fingerprint reader and Password Manager (which I actually like). To boot the ThinkPads will also come with a message waiting light, transforming the keyboard illumination function (Function-Page Up Key) into a visual alert to check voicemail. Clever- I love the keyboard illumination light too- not sure if I will like it blinking though. However, it is those little features, like the light, that make you love the Thinkpad line.

    THINKPAD BUYING TIPS & DEALS

Yes- I am a huge fan and I think everyone should get one- put Ubuntu on it for irony.

INSIDER TIP 1 Place your order, then have them call you back, (click the text box that says call back) sometimes, if you seem confused you can get that finger print reader for free- or weasel something- just be confused and they will often throw a tidbit or two in for free and my reps are always honest if something sucks. Thinkpads are just great machines. I am a loyalist and my Libretto nor Alienware compare.

INSIDER TIP 2- try the Lenova Discount Outlet - don’t bank on customization though- you might try their Special Offers Page. but if you like low prices and not afraid to up the power later…you might try looking at Ubid. I did by an X 40 Series off of ebay once, back when it was IBM, but I prefer the customization. Still try ubid it isn’t as flooded.

    low Priced Thinkpad auction

ME AND THE IMPENDING ThinkPad T60p WIDESCREEN SERIES

I just purchased one of the new, heavily loaded, Lenova T60P, (Intel® Core™ 2 Duo processor T7600 (2.33GHz, 4MB L2, 667MHz FSB with an ATI Mobility Fire GL V5250 with 256MB, 15.4 WSXGA+ TFT and 3 GB PC2-4200 DDR2 SDRAM 533MHz SODIMM Memory…sadly all the jumbo hard drives were at 5400 RPM so I settled on a 100GB Hard Disk Drive at 7200rpm)) perhaps too soon, even with a 3-4 week wait- forgoing my love and tradition of the ultra-lite X series which I have had a model 20, 30, 40, and 60. I was never a fan of the R Series, Z Series, but I am now interested in the T series). If I had waited a bit? Maybe I would be all VoIP, because according to Avaya this is not a roadmap- this is reality…right after Avaya’s announced move into SOA they are actually going to do something “clever”.

    Per Information Week

Avaya’s CEO Louis D’Ambrosio kicked off this year’s VoiceCon conference in Orlando, Fla., with a bang. D’Ambrosio, in an opening keynote address, announced a partnership with Lenovo to integrate Avaya’s Internet Protocol telephony capabilities in Lenovo’s notebook computers along with a suite of services for communications-enabled business processes. D’Ambrosio prepped the audience by making a bold statement that intelligent communications, a term Avaya uses to describe converged IP telephony networks designed for communications that go beyond voice, is happening today and is not a vision of the future. “We’re not talking roadmaps here. Intelligent communications is a reality,” he said.

Avaya wants to be the leader in that market. It’s teaming up with Lenovo to pre-load advanced IP telephony features on Lenovo’s ThinkPad notebooks in hopes of enhancing the communications experience for business professionals as they place and receive phone calls from their computers.

BACK IN THE BATCAVE in REDMOND

Meanwhile back in Redmond (NASDAQ: MSFT) Microsoft is getting set to release enhanced VoIP Solutions. The big deal- MSFT predicts in the next three years 100 million office customers will shift to software and click to call. No kidding with Let’sTalk’s incredibly low international rates and options like Skype for Business are now on the table. I don’t sense anything approaching brilliant from MSFT in that prediction- you don’t need hardware there- well minimal. Go ahead download Skype and try it- PC to PC calls are free, the video rocks (except for Mac- which appears to have moved in retrograde in latest version) and I use it more than anything else. Of course it sports AES Encryption, port agility, tunneling and other SOX and HIPPA inducing problems- but Facetime got the IM and VoIP Security call on that one- as did SYMT.

Google is allready distributing it well where else but among other goodies in their pack:

I wonder if they go all VoIP soon and cozy up to someone…if any company has problems it is Google (NASDAQ:GOOG). Problems…at any rate I imagine it will happen.

    NORTEL RE-DELAYS THE DELAY

Last week Nortel (NYSE/Toronto: NT) announced that it will delay the filing of its 10-K for the year ended December 31, 2006, until mid-March 2007. The company will also restate earnings for 2004, 2005, and the first nine months of 2006… again- wow. Now that is a re-statement. I doubt it will have any real effect. This week they are preaching ACTA. The ATCA standards, organized by the PICMG espouse a generic telecom chassis, that allows systems vendors to buy a “shell of hardware” and some software from outside suppliers. In theory this shortens the design cycle and lowers costs which will free vendors to focus their braintrust on software development. Ahem.

CISCO SYSTEMS GETS “SOCIAL MEDIA CLARITY”

OK- intentional buzzword alert, oldy but goody, for Greg at SMOmashup.com.

As an afterthought- and actually a big deal if you think about it. Network Computing reports that Cisco Systems Inc (NDD: CSCO) unveiled its Unified Communications System 6.0 that’s UCS 6.0 for rest of you, packed with a bunch of powerful stuff and there is no end to the social media, social network snap-ups in sight- smart strategy if you ask me, that and SIP-based IM and integrated presence! I bet MSFT and Lotus noticed.

SIP-based IM and integrated presence were two of the major changes Cisco introduced this week in the newest release of its Unified Communications system., version 6.0. This is the first time Cisco has provided IM at the desktop and puts it in direct competition with corporate IM suppliers, namely Microsoft and Lotus.

    ,

Cisco Systems gets IM out of the gate…like the rest of the normal world- it is the future, heck it was a decade ago with ICQ. That and VoIP. E-mail sucks…ask any kid.

    ,
Previously, Cisco provided presence on a separate, optional server to what was then called Unified CallManager. Cisco also added the Cisco Unified Mobile Communicator, which puts presence, corporate calling, and unified messaging capabilities as an application on BlackBerry, Windows Mobile, Symbian OS and, eventually, Brew handsets. Other additions to the Unified Communications System includes a new Wi-Fi phone; upgraded its MeetingPlace 6.0 Web conferencing with Flash for better PowerPoint viewing; the Cisco voicemail system, Unity 5.0, with handsfree and security functions; Cisco’s contact center with e-mail and chat integration and created special technology bundle for SMEs.

    ,

TEN MILLION NO SET BACK TO “SOCIAL MEDIA” BUYING BLITZ

Despite losing $10 million to a fraudster Cisco isn’t done with their social media acquisitions either. The company bought select assets of privately held Utah Street Networks, the operator of the social networking site Tribe.net and is on the lookout for more. Ugh. Tribe.net? OK…they wanted the infrastructure- not tribe.net- good.

So Tribe.net will remain independent and since the financial terms of the deal were not disclosed, we don’t know what they are paying, but I am sure it is a drop in the bucket.

Speaking of Cisco I recently found out their CEO and Board Chairman of Cisco is a native West Virginian (well born in Cleveland, but moved to Charleston as a tot), as were other key founders. Some WVU alumni, some Marshall. Eitherway chalk one up for the Appalachian technologists no one knows exists. Didn’t know that did you? Go ‘eers, go Thundering Herd.

Ubuntu Convert- My Second Life- ThinkPad Gets an Ubuntu Upgrade

Sam Harrelson (Pastor Sam?) has converted another to the ranks of the “will not be undead soon”….

    early this a.m. I said:

I am already looking at converting my Ibm X40 (backup lap) to Ubuntu now…still thinking on it. I know I have to spend some up front time, but I have to wonder if the long term pay off is worth it….Learn more about Ubuntu.

Late this P.M. after a long day of security research…

It is DONE- the dirty deed is done dirt cheap andquite complete, Thanks to Eric G. for assisting! Ubunta advocates are everywhere. I have been absorbed into the world of Ubuntu…

My old IBM Thinkpad X40 (story below) now sports this O/S and it screams like a bat out of hell (you might try Ubuntu 6.06 if your PC is rather dated)….so far so good…. I feel like I have been unplugged from the matrix and spat out into a giant toilet bowel of jelly slime…now I wonder if it can push Second Life? Doubt it. I do feel some machinima widgets coming on though.

BTW this is filed under deals and steals too- no coupons needed, no discount codes- Ubuntu is FREE…Grab the .iso and burn it to CD or order it if you wish…or if you like getting stuff in the mail or want to send a gift…here are some Ubuntu things that are DIRT CHEAP. Burn it or buy it for your friends, your mother-in-law, man it beats MonkeyPhoneCalls even…well close.

Seriously- Do you want a cheaper laptop? Start with a different O/S and different office tools- and your laptop is already far cheaper and more for th
