Viral Video and Memetic Deconstruction

This video, ZEITGEIST (see www.zeitgeistmovie.com) is making heavy rounds on You Tube, blogs, and twitter.

I listened to this video while catching up on e-mail after being down and out for two days with the flu….from background I picked up this as the general tone of the film which goes back into history to try to tie 9/11 to government malfeasance. I would add it is important to deconstruct this video to determine what is the “viral shell” and what is the actual “memes” the creators are trying to release. Good question.

Half Historical Musings

From the audio I gathered there are a number of references, or parrallels with Christ (Christian), Horus (Egyptian), Dionysus (Greek), Mithra (Persian), etc, etc, and in short seems to make the conclusion that all of these dieties are tied together astrologically…old news or the video advances the concept of Armageddon as nothing more than the misinterpretation of an astrological metaphor and as part of an act of ongoing “transference”- and that Christ a product of Roman politics. None really shocking given much of the Greek books were written in koine Greek…let’s call it “lost in translation”. We really don’t know.

It also chalks up a certain cross (which looks like an extended Crux Ansata) to paganism. Again no shocker since the Sun God Tau could be seen as a fore runner of the cross- represented by a T.

Why not Throw in the Masons?

Personally I was wondering if they were going to sling in the “All Seeing Eye” (as on the US Dollar), a.k.a. The Eye of Providence, part of the symbolism Great Seal of the United States…also the words “annuit coeptis” which roughly means “it is favorable to our undertakings”.

It is positioned atop an unfinished pyramid where there are 13 steps representing the 13 states. It would be easy to chalk this all up to Masonic influence if one used Thomas Smith Webb’s, The Freemasons Monitor, published in 1797 where he wrote “although our thoughts, words and actions may be hidden from the eyes of man, yet the All-Seeing Eye, whom the Sun, Moon and Stars obey, and under whose watchful care even Comets perform their their stupendous revolutions, pervades the innermost recesses of the human hear and will reward us according to our merits.” It is never that simple and that is unlikely since there was active and strong anti-Masonic propoganda circulating at the time. The Masons did not appear to design the seal either (many of their symbols are borrowed from Christianity), more than likely it was a mistranslation from 1884’s Harvard scholar, Eliot Charles Norton who commented it was merely “a dull emblem of a Masonic fraternity”.

If you want to get all conspiracy theorish you could make a stretch and say Google emerged from the “G” often seen over the All Seeing Eye in Masonic literature (From Darkness to Light) where it is the “Great Architect”, and the The Eye of Providence, if any symbol, is a Christian one and one perhaps borrowed from the Egyptian Eye of Horus.*

No matter what your belief, and I am tolerant and respect all, I leave it to each individual to take their own meanings and find their own way into life- this is an important aspect of libery. Ruminating over it will not change it, and I am certainly not out to change people’s beliefs and refuse to chase shadows because I simply do not have enough information.

Video Shifts and Overtakes HTTP

Here is what I do find important:

According to a recent report VIDEO (e.g. P2PTV, IPTV, etc) has now taken over HTTP traffic, even P2P traffic as the most prevalent form of traffic online. History aside this is the shift we need to think about it. Source of media consumption really is shifting or has shifted, where we get our information is changing and it changes as it enters into our sphere…this is an important and critical paradigm shift. Web 2.0, User Generated Content, ability to give feedback, etc are having an effect..

Meme as Gene

It brings new thoughts about memetics (or revives older ones), meme fecundity, meme replication, etc. If anything I think our government, any government for that matter, should adopt micro-chunking as a way to get information into the organization. Twitter or micro-chunk among yourselves folks- information and ideas flow flaster. Response is quicker and more ideas can be chewed over. Intelligence is only as good as action though.

ADDENDUM

* Eye of Horus- I believe it was known as “indjat” or “wedjet” and this symbol represented the falcon-headed god Horus and the Sun God- Re. I also believe the eyes may have had some root in duality (moon/sun) representing balance between reason and intuition or light/dark. If you want to take it a step further you might read Thomas Mann’s, Death in Venice, and apply the Greek concepts of the Apollonian and Dionysian which could be a parrallel. Not quite the same…but interesting at any rate.

At least episode I does…(I Worship his Shadow). The guys who brought you Skype now bring out Joost, and so far I am impressed…back to Lexx, a show I never thought I would catch again.

“I am Kai. Last of the Brunnen-G. Millenia ago the Brunnen-G led humanity to victory in the war against the insect civilization. The Time Prophet predicted that I would be the one to destroy the Divine Order and The League of 20,000 Planets. Someday that will happen, but not today, as today is the day of my death. The day our story begins…”

– Kai (I Worship His Shadow)

Those wanting a free Joost invite- just drop a note, I’ll get to it as I can, it appears to the tight caps are being lifted.

Long Trip - Some Reading, Joost, P2PTV and URL Shrinking Widgets

Posted in Free Software, IPTV, P2P, P2PTV, Second Life, Video, Video Games, VoIP Fanatics, Web 2.0, Widgets by wayne.porter on May 2nd, 2007

Preparing for a long trip and time off….but to keep people stimulated…maybe I’ll have time to post.

A Joost Beta Review From FranticIndustries. There reaction was pretty much the same that I had- “Wow”. P2PTV, IPTV aregoing to change things.

In Second Life- virutalive.tv 2007 machinima contest : Apex High Studio is sponsoring a machinima contest for the virtualive.tv event happening May 10th. For more information or swing over to VirtualLiveTV Blog. Prize is 10k Lindens though. Hmmm I’d pay more than that for killer machinima.

Shout out to Bleys Chevalier for his clever TinySL widget. Shrink URLS so you don’t have too. Suggest he hads _top options among other things. Still pretty cool. Get the widget here although drop him an e-mail if you have a top level SL related domain to get on the “Safe” list…the whole idea to begin with.

Buying Warcraft Gold and Swapping Joost Betas

The Virtual Goods and Joost Swaps

A recent blog on Joost and P2PTV prompted a reply from a user who mentioned JoostSwap.com. This reminds me of Gmail beta accounts…remember the day?

Joost is riding a heady wave of popularity and curiosity that is probably powered by a recent deal with Viacom (and perhaps Viacom’s fight with YouTube)- giving Joost users access to the MTV, Nickelodeon, and BET television networks. JoostSwap basically allows “lucky invitees” to swap their Joost beta accounts for an offer they find appealing…from the “swap” site.

Wednesday, 21 February 2007
So joost has been out for a while now, but only a few very lucky people have been added to the beta group. However, there is an all to familiar beta invitation program. The only problem is finding someone who will give you an invitation.

That is where JoostSwap comes in. Head on over to our Swap list, and cry out for help. When someone with an invitation sees you plee [sic], and likes what you have to offer, they will reply, and you can contact them. Simple eh?

For those with the almighty invites, head over to the Swap list yourself, and check it out. You rule this area. You decide who is worthy to receive the Holy Grail. Your greed or mercy will determine the true cost for a “free” subscription to Joost.

Seriously though. This site is a way for those without to get, and those with, to give, with a little capitalism thrown in. What are you waiting for? Andy Kaufman to admit it was all a big hoax? Create a user name already and get started!

Virtual Beta and Virtual Goods

I find it an interesting parallel between buying virtual goods like World of WarCraft Power leveling or Second Life Linden buying and the swapping of “joost beta accounts” for tangible or intangible goods. Both are subjective in value. Both are desired by “fans”. Both would seem to have relatively limited life spans. The only prime difference is that one (beta accounts) are predestined to become ubiquitous. At least I am sure Joost hopes so.

I am surprised someone hasn’t just created a “hot beta swap” site for those cutting edge applications or accounts that everyone seems to covet. Is this virtual economic goods scarcity in action? I don’t know- I am going to see about a Joost account.

Get Joost

Joost (pronounced ‘juiced’) is an interactive software for distributing TV shows and other forms of video over the Web using peer-to-peer tv technology, created by Niklas Zennström and Janus Friis the same two that founded Skype and Kazaa.

Joost began development in 2006. Working under the code name “The Venice Project”. The program is based on P2PTV technology and promises near-TV resolution images. In short it turns your PC into on-demand Television without any need for hardware. News updates, discussion forums, show ratings, and multi-user chat sessions (often linked to the active stream/channel) are made possible through the use of semi-transparent widget overlays….

widgets…yes widgets…

Joost’s “Composition”

- Based on XULRunner
- Audio from ZAP Media Kit.
- P2P layer from the Joltid company, (they did Skype’s p2p layer)
-Video playback utilizes the CoreCodec, CoreAVC H.264 video decoder.

I think this one is going to be large. Still in closed beta, but I know a beta tester…hmmmm.

Then we have Zattoo

OK No bad Fantasy Island puns.

Zattoo is a proprietary P2PTV system (as I understand it) focused on the European market. As of December 2006, the product is in public beta testing. The player is based on H.264 (QuickTime and ffmpeg), and is Mac OS X and Windows XP compatible. It needs a minimum downstream bandwidth of 400kbps client side.

On to China and TVUnetworks and TVUPlayer

TVUnetworks is an Internet-based P2PTV company based in China. Interesting. The software they produce is called TVUPlayer, which uses peer-to-peer technology to distribute TV stations from a global selection.

Chew on some Babelgum

Babelgum is software developed by Babel Networks, from former Fastweb’s founder Silvio Scaglia started in 2005 with the aim to develop interactive software for distributing TV shows and other forms of video over the Web using peer-to-peer tv technology.

Go left with Zudeo

Zudeo is both a BitTorrent client and content service by Azureus, Inc. The website allows users to upload, download and share video content using this client. Unlike video sharing websites such as YouTube, Zudeo focuses on DVD-quality and high-definition video content

Why do I bring it up now? Because I don’t see many people talking about it…or maybe I am not listening to the right people. I know Joost is on some of my colleague’s radar…but what of the rest?

Bonus Points

- Revenue Sharing
- Interactive T.V.
- Web 2.0
- Social and Media

1000 Bonus Points if you can figure out what traditional affiliate network was way too early for the rise of P2PTV and related technology.
