Follow up Comment on SLLA Interview from MSGiro Grosso

I found another interesting comment worth publishing after my Revenews interview with the elusive Second Life Liberation Army. Also note some extended comments I made here. MsGiro Grosso’s analogies are not lost on me, nor, do I think, were they lost on Sam editor at CostPerNews who also senses the significance of the metaverse “ripple effect” or perhaps “mirror effect”. (I will try to get in touch with MsGiro Grosso if he/she is indeed an avatar.)

Thanks Wayne for making contact with the SLLA and bringing the dialogue to a neutral location. As a developer in SL who is going to be responsible for bringing many brands into SL I’m sure the big red Target (not the brand) will be on my back as well, although we feel like a fair amount of our clients will be well received. We’re starting off promoting an indie film. If you attack an indie film then the entire population of SL becomes a target to the SLLA.

My only issue with them is that they are a leaderless organization. In the history of mankind I feel like there have been very few liberation armies who did not have a polarizing leader that people rallied around or against. The modern day comparison to this is the insurgency in Iraq where Iraqi’s are killing Iraqi’s. Do they want to be compared to that, even in a virtual world? I admit the comparison may be a bit harsh, but their message treats SL like it’s a life and death situation so I feel comfortable comparing it to a real world atrocity just to add some level of context.

What I don’t understand is that SL gives you to ability, as a “land” owner to set up your own covenant that governs your space. Why not scoop up a bunch of space and apply rules/laws that you deem appropriate and let everyone else decide what they want to do? Isn’t the whole idea of SL and the real world to live harmoniously regardless of differences? I give the SL community credit, because they work hard at trying to make the metaverse a little bit better than the real world.

The SLLA blog has no comment feature and no ability to email them directly to join in on the discussion, which I’m more than interested in doing. How are we possibly going to sustain the conversation if the communication is only coming from one direction?

I don’t think there is any intention of sustaining the conversation MG, micropersuasion or macropersuation- like try talking to a griefer flying over a Sim and dropping crap- literally. I do think we are going to see MANY conversations heat up and the battlegrounds will include the metaverse of SL.

    Hi Wayne,
    thanks for the blogroll add.

Reading your SL posts gives me a sense of relief at having given up mudding and online gaming for the most part.

I’ll see you at ASW and was wondering if there’s Wi-Fi at the Lake Mead camp group.

If I see someone hunched over in the Bally’s dining area doing area building, I’ll be sure to come up and introduce myself.

    Cheers.

    Andrew,

Oh don’t give up- the metaverse is in the nascent stages!

As for Lake Mead- we don’t know yet- we are making preparations for the Gonzo blitz- and we may end up moving around quite a bit.

If you someone dead in the snow- it is probably Sam- me having shot him for talkin me into this.

    regards,
    Wayne
