Dirty Domain Tricks- Google Blind To the S Variable

Sam. H and I went down the rabbit hole last night exploring some of the dark caverns of the net. I won’t steal his thunder but what we found were more dirty tricks. Einstein would have pondered I am sure.

Note the “nofollow tag” before the obfuscated domain. Google doesn’t see the obfuscated domain and php code with the s= variable that takes you on a ride into slummy PPCSE land…the plot gets MUCH thicker but I’ll let Sam tell the story.

[...] Click fraud is alive and very well for those of you wondering why this may be a big deal. I’ll be blogging more this week about a recent trip down the rabbit hole with the famous (or infamous depending on your persuasion) Wayne Porter. This trip started with an AdSense scraping site making money off of high paying “mesothelioma” keywords and led to some places that caused me severe “shock and awe.” The implications are beyond what I would consider just superficial, and extend well into the very ideas and assumptions that we hold about the internet and the money trail it provides which an lead to some very unsavory places. As a heavy user of Google Adwords in promoting our firm of Solicitors we learned VERY quickly to turn off content matching to avoid being displayed on websites created for Adsense revenue, especially at the cost per click we get hit with in the ‘Personal Injury Solicitor’ catagory (I am sure you will all say we deserve it)!

The Adwords spend dropped dramatically overnight and the quality of leads increased.

Google make it difficult for users to turn of content matching in their Adwords account, many advertisers don’t even know it is switched on, or what it is.
