Web 2.0 Blog- Social Networking Terms and Bare Basics

Posted in Blogging, Social Bookmarking, Social Networks by wayne.porter on October 16th, 2006

In my previous post I talked about AJAX (another time) and quite a bit about blogging….here are some of the common answers to questions I get posed.

What is a Permalink? Short for a permanent link. The unique URL of a single post. Use this when you want to link to a post somewhere as you would any normal hyperlink. For example if you were to link to this post you would use this: http://www.wayneporter.com/?p=141

If you wanted to signal me you might alo send a ping through TrackBack . Trackbank is a system that allows a blogger to see who has seen the original post and has written another entry concerning it. The system works by sending a ‘ping’ between the blogs, and therefore providing the alert to the other bloggers. Users can choose to publish or not to publish trackbacks, to accept or not accept them, or to delete them. In simple terms it means “Hey, I read what you wrote and I have made a reference to you or written something pertinent to what you were writing about.” Very handy.

The trackback for this blog would be: http://www.wayneporter.com/wp-trackback.php?p=141
Some blog software allows you to auto-discover pings and will do it for you. If you want to ping the blog aggregators (like directories for blogs) your blog software can do it for you or you can use a service like Pingomatic. I have a list of services here.

The “Ping” is the actual alert in the TrackBack system that notifies the original poster of a blog post when someone else writes an entry concerning the original post.

If you wanted to use a social book mark like FURL or De.li.cio.us you would click on the social bookmarking or tag service De.li.cio.us.

So what is a tag?

A tag is a keyword or term used to classify content by means of a folksonomy. Tags are usually chosen informally and personally by the author of the item — i.e. not usually as part of some formally defined classification scheme. Tags are typically used in dynamic, flexible, automatically generated internet taxonomies for online resources such as computer files, web pages, digital images, and internet bookmarks (both in social bookmarking services, and in the current generation of web browsers.

Sample Technorati Tags: *not usually in a list format)

  • A Tag Cloud is a text-based depiction of tags across a body of content to show frequency of tag usage and enable topic browsing. In general, the more commonly used tags are displayed with a larger font or stronger emphasis. Each term in the tag cloud is a link to the collection of items that have that tag.

If you are really savvy you might use a blog’s Really Simple Syndication function called an RSS Feed.

RSS Feed: The file containing a blog’s latest posts. It is read by an RSS aggregator/reader and shows at once when a blog has been updated. It may contain only the title of the post, the title plus the first few lines of a post, or the entire post. An RSS aggregator is merely oftware or an online service allowing a blogger to read an RSS feed, especially the latest posts on his/her favorite blogs. A.K.A.a reader or feedreader. At the top right you should see a feedburner icon you will need a feedreader or service to access it.
