Speaking Malware Research Slang

A quick guide for Bev so she can interact and talk with researchers. Note these are the bare basics. Things can get pear-shaped fast.

“Bring crosses and holy water” : Very Nasty patch of the net, full of zombies, trojans or large botnet

“ok!” : Said in russian accent- means- acknowledged- I’ll do that. Said during intense research periods. Also means goodnight.
“Lob” : Move story into sequence on a domain or site- more experimental move.
“Inject” : A strong lob with strategy behind it.

“Going all Pear Shaped” : Situation is no longer normal- getting weird fast.

“Too Insane to Make up Department”: Usually reserved for social engineering botnet sellers but any behavior observed that is so completely crazy you couldn’t make it up.

“That’s going to Bash”: Someone said something really stupid in Skype- goes to Bash.org

“Pwned”: Owned. Demolished- taken over in the worst way.

“Script-Kiddies”: Teens with botnet kits sent out to capture machines who will get taken over before they are used much.

“Zombie Master”: People who really control botnets and backdoor the script-kiddies.

“Phreaker” : Dudes that specialize in phone hacking.

“Got Root”: God status- taken over and running box or server

“Bad Neighborhood”: Usually a range of IP addresses totally hopped up on malware

“Hopped Up”: Area crawling with malware or highly aggressive attack behavior.

“Beachhead”: A computer that has been pwned and now being used to as attack launch zone.

“Oh Noes”: oh no, normal research response is “oh god what now?”

“Gotta See This (GST)”: Situation Normal All Fouled Up Beyond belief or a stupid conversation.

“AssHat”: Moron, idiot, or jerk. Someone one has head in arse wearing it as hat.

“Pimping”: Distributing software where they should not be.

“2600″ : reference to hacker quarterely-

“Logic Bomb” : Conditional If Then situation e.g. when x hits y then execute attack.

“Get out the Long Knives”: Prepare for viscious counter attacks, or go in for kill.

“Take a Razor to Their Stream”: Take out and or contact their money suppliers.

“Laundering Traffic”: Moving surfers through redirects, 302s, onBlur or any other method.

“404″: Not there. Usually a person not paying attention or observant.

“Boob”: Moron. Idiot…similiar too Asshat only reserved for incompetence.

“Hot Freshy Server”: Clean box sold by shady dudes for whacked out plans.

“Getting Dossed”: Denial-of-Service attack in progress.

“l33t”: Script-Kiddie for elite. Said in disdain. e.g. He was l33t- not.

“Gone Tits Up”: Game over- target is gone or smashed.

“All Washed Down”: All traces removed, channels gone, cleared out.

“BotHunting”: Attempting to land into an infected botnet and pose as a drone.

“Drone”: PC that is enslaved and part of a botnet- controlled by master.

“The Undead”: Another name for drones, since users are under control of a master.

“Damage Points”: Arbitrary points awarded after scoring against an opponent or getting hit with an attack or site so extreme one’s eyes hurt.

“Cool Points”: Given to media or others for clever lead in on stories, neat quotes, etc

“Full Dive”: Complex workup on a case including ethereal traces, vid, pics, logs.

“HJT LOG”: Hi Jack This Log- log of a common diagnostic anti-malware tool.

“Toasted”: Shutdown. Gone. Fried. Also a noun- “That box is toast”

“Boom, Headshot”: Publicly nailed. Shot in the head.

“Like kudzu on meth”: Story moving at a very fast rate.

“Need Diggage”: Need more on a story to gain traction and bring aware.

“LOL”: laughing out loud, often said as lollers or lollerific. As in I can’t believe they did that.
Awfulsville”: Crappily produced, filmed or made media.

“Kicked in the Nuts”: Self explanatory.

“Going off Grid”: Disconnecting from PC for physical interaction with world.

“Staying low”: Skype status of being online, but not visible otherwise wouldn’t get anything productive done.

“Defcon 5″: Hostile entity- intervention needed stat.

“CageMatch”: Owner of company steps into forum for Q&A

“Spazboxian” Pulsar like IRC server behavior involved in various attacks.

“Poser:” Total loser.

“Emo”: Breed of teenager. Wears silly glasses and cuts self and listens to bad music.

“Goth”: Breed of teenager that thinks they are undead or wears lots of mascara and likes Type O Negative type of music.

“Meatspun”: Hit with a heavy shock meme. Eyes hurt, damage points. Person is scarred.

Awesome Factor” sliding scale of how great or awesome something is.

“All things that kick ass”: Usually refers to a technical writeup of extreme intricacy.

“pr0n”: porn, often refers to illegal porn discovered that needs to be reported.

“phish”: attempting to nail your credit details or private details though social engineering or middle-man attack, etc.

Sucks Ass”: Usually refers to an install or piece of trashy software.

“Re-image”: System is so fried you have to start from scratch.

“ShadowServer”: “Mythical” cabal where botnets are tracked.

“top gun”: also top notch- superior researcher, works hard, pays attention to detail.

“hard core”: dedicated to the cause or technically advanced. e.g. marine reference

“and more besides”: A lot more dicey action than what you see on the surface…also there is more to come.
